“Oh, Holiday ! “

Normally, I don’t design decor according to the time of year, since doing so may limit the possibilities of display, and I think your sense of design, and style should be enjoyed year round.

However, I am in a festive mood as of late, and thought I might design something that could be dressed up for holidays, or be used as a colorful niche any time of year. So, I present to you:

“Welcome Home the Stewardess !”

“Welcome Home the Stewardess!”

The post title is a little play on words, and quite fitting ( if I say so myself).  After all, it combines my business name with the theme for my set design.  Did you notice? :)

Now that the set design is complete, I was anxious to start taking photos of dolls occupying the space. What better place to start than on sunny afternoon, when natural daylight makes the apartment come to life!

You may remember that my thought process was to make the space look like a mid-century modern apartment that an airline stewardess might live in.

I thought about describing each photo, but instead, I will let the photos tell the story. You can fill in the blanks however you perceive them.

Imagine, if you will: Just arriving home from her shift, jet setting across the country!

Lighting is a big factor when taking photos of anything. It sets the mood and the tone. I love the following photos for the lighting alone.  It could be dusk, although I actually took these photos first thing in the morning.  I got these shots simply by not using the flash on my camera.

For this photo shoot  I used an Integrity Fashion Royalty doll.  As I am still playing with the set and trying the spaces in different ways I will use other fashion dolls so you can see them in the space too, so stay tuned !

I love what I do!   It’s a cool business – bringing your dolls to life.  I say, why not enjoy them as much as possible!  Add another dimension to your doll collection!

“Dining Du Jour” !

Adding a dining area –  A last look inside my thought process for “Executing a Set Design” .  Well, as far as creating spaces and furnishings is concerned.  This is exciting to me, because it means that building my set is near completion, and the fun of a photo shoot with models can soon take place!

I was unsure about adding more furniture and perhaps another wall to this design, because that would take up more space. BUT, the beauty of my set is that everything is movable and interchangeable! You will see that in the near future when I take photos with the dolls.

I decided to add an eating area to create the illusion that this was, in fact , a true living space. If you follow Welcome Home, you may notice that I usually don’t create kitchens or eating spaces. I tend to want my models to be only glamorous and conversational!   But, since I was going with the feeling of loft/studio living, it would be best to include a table and chairs.

First I had to decide on style.  I usually think these things out in my mind or sketch on paper, but sometimes, I happen to have a few props hanging around(remember, I save everything) that could help me visualize not only styling, but how much space a table and two chairs would take up.

I did have these two MCM styled chairs that I’d never gotten around to making cushions for. I liked how their shape blended with the other furniture in the space. I also had the foresight to create two round side tables,(one already in the living room) leaving me this extra one to match with the two chairs.

The pros – chairs would work well if drawn into the living area.  The small round table echos the other side table and coffee table.

The cons – This set doesn’t really look proper for dining. It’s more of a conversational area and I have enough of that going on in the living room.

No, this set won’t do.

Ok – so, this left me with no choice but to make a new set. One that might be both aesthetically pleasing and not take up too much room.

I am not a big fan of pedestal tables, but with this style, chairs can easily slide under the table for a more compact look.

This photo taken,of course, prior to painting and cushions. I wanted to see how the shape worked in this space and how much room the set took up.

This would definitely work!

A little paint, some colorful cushions and some homey touches  - Voilà !

Coming up next – A  photo shoot utilizing the entire set and inhabitants of the vinyl persuasion!

Stay tuned !
