Made with Vintage Barbie in mind, the set has an early 1960′s vibe with sleek lines and  rich warm tones.

The suite  includes two rooms –  A living area  and a dining area.

In the Dining Room : 

Dining table and four chairs take center stage . Four  ”mirage” chairs with Danish Modern detailing and fabric cushions compliment the slim “spice brown” table.

Matching credenza has caned detailed front and shelves to showcase your finest dinner ware.  Cabinet is also painted “spice brown” . Caning painted  in “mirage” .

The pink dining room wall features 2 windows for lots of light .  On the wall, 3 ornamental metal flowers reflect  the metal room divider and add a bit of  whimsical charm .

Step up  -(yes, the floor is raised !)  into the Living Area !

Living area features the “Party Sofa” . Named for its length of 13″ and able to accommodate 4 or 5 guests! Lively atomic print upholstery with 5 toss pillows. 

The open coffee table is painted spice brown with a chartreuse interior. 

Fireplace wall is BRICK and painted pink ! The far wall is painted in complimentary tones of grey.

Raised floor is painted in warm, rich burnt sienna with copper tones.

This darling suite also has moveable or re-movable pieces. This allows you to change things up a bit and add your own flair to the rooms.

The valances over the windows are covered in the same material as the dining chair cushions and sofa.  They are removable.  A cleaner look without the valances or a softer look with the valances. 

The room divider stands on its own and can be placed to the side of the living area OR near the fireplace separating the two rooms. The choice is up to you!  Stairs are unattached and can be moved at will also.

I’ve been working on a new line of furniture that really emanates the early 1960′s. Though my work has always shown a vintage flair, (“Neo-Retro” as I call it) this particular collection will concentrate on sleek lines, tight cushions, and classic styling ! Because the nature of the line is reminiscent of mid-century modern and the type of furniture you might see Barbie enjoying, the line has been aptly named “Suite63″.

A Place. A Style. A Look. “Suite63″ can be all of these things!

In the coming months you will see single pieces from the line debuting as I continue to work on developing new selections.

“Futuristic Glamour”

“Space – 2010″

 For most baby boomers, when we think of  the term “modern” or “futuristic” we might think of the late 1950′s or the 1960′s.

Truth of the matter is, that the prominent  style of modernism, has been around since the 1920′s!  Architecture and interior design were moving in a new direction, and in 1932, an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, in Midtown Manhattan, New York , held  The International Exhibition of Modern Architecture. Trends that were stylistically similar were put together on display and it was here, that you could see the future taking hold!

 Today, we are still intrigued by what is or may be futuristic.  Why even looking at the written year 2010 seems futuristic to me, yet here we are living it!

 Moving forward in my own endeavors as a miniature furniture designer, I  thought I’d try my hand at working with mediums other than wood.  When I considered futuristic in a furniture sense,  I pictured glass, acrylic, and metals. At first this seemed like the results might end up being cold, and uninviting. But, since I was the one creating the future in my miniature world, I decided it did not have to be that way at all.

 I do feel that space , and lots of it, reflects my ideals of a futuristic home. White evokes space, and  so the walls and floors do that work for me. I also envision a lot of natural light in this home, therefore plenty of windows are a must!

 A tour of the home on these pages shows you how metals,  glass and acrylic can work in harmony to provide a truly delightful place to reside, be you human or vinyl !

 The futuristic glamour of these rooms, in a sense, not only projects what may be, but reflects what has been . By the same token, the diva who lives in this home is Mattel’s Fashion Editor Silkstone Barbie. She herself is a reflection of  her famous vintage counter part.

  And so, I invite you to take a peek into the future, for the future is now!

 Welcome, welcome! -  Step into the living area where you will find the most modern conveniences in comfort. A pair of laid-back sofas placed opposite one another, invite lengthy conversation and relaxation. Smokey grey acrylic tables, and copper  accessories dance with the light that abounds in the room.

Our hostess fits seamlessly in this elegant decor.

Two large rectangular windows, capped on the top and bottom by copper, reflect the light so beautifully, that they appear to be light boxes!   A  few minor, yet significant accessories like the clay pots, glass leaf arrangement and apple green throw pillows, add just the right splash to this room. Simple, spacious, and yet inviting.

A fine place to Dine! – This roomy, rectangular space, features a spectacular clear acrylic dining set!  The long, sleek table is surrounded by four chairs. Each chair has an elegant pale blue cushion for a softer look. The tricky thing about designing with clear acrylic is that it can appear as if it’s floating! So, a mauve colored silk rug was added to anchor this gorgeous set to the room.

 The ultra modern room divider was placed up against the large wall of windows for privacy as well as interest. It’s circular shapes reflect light on to the table for a spectacular effect!

Again, not many accessories are needed. A free form copper vase lends itself to silk flowers for a lovely centerpiece. Combined with the room divider, the two make a perfect backdrop for photo opportunities with our resident diva.

A Glitzy Sanctuary -  A lady’s boudoir. So feminine and chic! And, an exciting challenge for me to be able to design with mirrors!  Again, mirrored furniture, very glamorous, and seemingly futuristic, but, dates back to the 1930′s.  And, yet, you can find this glamorous look in stores today. So, why not take it with us to the future?

Mirrored furniture is truly stunning! And a few pieces go a long way. Mirrors tend to give off a silver sheen when photographed and that’s why these cool calming blue tones were used in the bedroom to play up the shine.

The wall length headboard is upholstered in the same fabric as the bedspread,  tying the two together. The glimmering night stands on either side of the bed hold glass based lamps adding further elegance and shine.

 A simple white carpet covers the floor.

 Instead of a painting or something flat above the headboard, a sprig of wild flowers  was used as art work. It adds a  beautiful splash of color and dimension.

Our equally beautiful lady of manor agrees.

This is my interpretation of a futuristic home.  A matter of space and how you choose to define it.

So, you tell me…Is this 1939, 1969, or the year 2010?

Yes, the future looks very bright and inviting for our dolls, no matter the era.

“Romancing the Orient” -  A stunning example of how color and pattern can entertain and delight the senses.  This complete set of furnishings features all you need to spice up your doll display !

Let’s go inside and have a look around.

Vibrant, yet still classically glamorous, this set features TWO sofas, fully upholstered in a rich raspberry silk brocade. Its iridescent qualities reflect reds,pinks and a hint of blue!  The brocade pattern is one of cherry blossoms in pink, white and green-gold .  Sofas each have cushioned back and side pillows, and clear acrylic legs . Underneath, painted a whimsical pale turquoise !

Petite side table painted in burnt gold, plays host to the “jade” lamp !  Again keeping with the oriental theme, I designed the lamp using this carved jade green glass bead. The shade is a salmon colored linen with shots of orange as noted in the fringe. It’s THE perfect lighting accessory !

The “Tree of Life” wall panel is also included in this set, so that you can incorporate it into your own wall, or display cabinet. It has been painted gold. Makes a perfect wall ornament, or window !

I have had numerous requests for my glass shelved wall unit seen in some of my photos.  I hesitated offering this piece because to make it in multiples is difficult and time-consuming. It’s a large piece and it needs to be spray painted out-of-doors, when the weather is good.  That’s touch and go here in New England, in February. Not good spray painting weather for a gal without a spray booth!   Thus my delay in debuting these new items to you.

That being said, I decided to make a few of these wall units. First, because I want to be able to offer you unique/original pieces and second because they really make such a wonderful,versatile backdrop as you are about to see.

The pieces I am offering here today are what I call “Grand” because they are lovely enough to make a  statement in any room !

“The Grand Wall Unit”  - Measuring approximately 16″ h x 21″ w, this light-weight, hand-made piece showcases acrylic “green glass” shelving, 2 cabinet bases (doors do not open), and a neat recessed “lighting” feature.

You will notice that I cut small holes in the cap of the cabinet to accommodate lighting.  The wall unit is built purposely, with an open top feature. This allows all types of light to come into the cabinet. That means, if you place it in front of a sunny window, sunlight streams in through these holes and onto the shelves. If you place it in a lighted doll case or cabinet, the same effect with happen. AND, you can also use your own lighting to create a lighted fixture.  Because of the open access top, you can use small LED lights to create the neatest effects.

Here I’ve used 3 small pocket flashlights (sitting inside the well at the top of the unit) to create this look:

Recessed holes go all the way across, so you can use as many lights as you’d like to light the entire wall unit.

The center of the wall unit  was purposely left as an open space. This provides an area for you to showcase anything you’d like against that wall.  If you have purchased other Welcome Home  pieces from me, you may have the perfect addition for this space.  

Maybe you previously purchased some of my wall panels. These make a perfect addition to the space as is the case above with the turquoise  “Clover” panel  and below with the “Tree of Life” panel.

Because of the nature of my design,  instead of adding a piece of furniture to the open space, maybe you’ll add some lightweight drapes  and use the LED lights to create a WINDOW effect as I’ve done here:

The curtain effect is great, even without lighting !  It makes the wall unit appear as if there is truly a window between the shelves :

So many ways to display !   Also notice that I’ve added my “Floral” wall panel in the above photo for a little more whimsy in the room.  *  There are no holes to accommodate a curtain rod. I just cut a dowel to the exact opening and tension holds it in place. The curtain is a lightweight sheer material.

“The Grand Sideboard” – I must say, that I am totally in love with this next piece !  I saw something similar, on a full-scale level made by a fabulous  furniture company in Portugal. (More about that in the near future). I just KNEW I had to make one for my dolls, and so, here is my interpretation of that piece .  I hope you will love it as much as I do !

The Grand Sideboard measures approx. 9″ w x 5″ tall.  The front has 4 mock doors (do not open) and is adorned with paper roses.  The tapered legs and slim styling – only 2 1/2″ deep, allows the piece to look modern and classic at the same time. The tapered legs are a first for me. I love the way they look and will most likely incorporate them in future pieces.

The Art of the Diorama

 Doll collecting has come a long way in the last decade. It has evolved into something more spectacular than just capturing our childhood memories.  I see this the most when it comes to the “fashion doll”.

The mere explosion of  new sculpts, couture clothing, articulation,(which, of course, equals life-like posing and movement) has sent our collecting experience down a whole new avenue!

 We are no longer content to see our dolls stand like little soldiers on a shelf.  No more will we spend our hard earned doll money on beautiful models and just leave them waiting for something to do !

 Since our lovelies can now pose more human-like than ever, it makes perfect sense to enjoy them in another dimension.

 Let me introduce you to,  The ART of the Diorama…

  The word diorama has several definitions ( albeit all very similar,) the most common, from Webster Dictionary:

 A scene, often in miniature, reproduced in three dimensions by placing objects, figures, etc. in front of a painted background.

 While that’s basically it in a nut shell, I tend to take this a bit further. Since my dolls are more life-like than ever, it is my intention to have them housed in the most life like way.

 Dioramas for me are a unique perspective on the way I look at and enjoy my dolls.  It’s a visual art that blends talents like painting, drawing, and design  in a way that no other medium can do.

 Remember grade school and our little “shoe box” dioramas? These were elemental, yes, but it taught us to take a closer look at and learn a little more about the subject we were creating for.

  On a higher level, dioramas can still do that for our dolls. You can take your favorite doll, and place her in an entirely new situation.  Imagine her anywhere, just by creating a miniature world around her.

 This happened for me, while writing about and photographing my dolls. I wanted my pictures to have a more interesting composition than just the doll itself. So, I decided to make some props to utilize in these photos. To my sheer delight, I found out that not only did I enjoy making these pieces but the interest grew into learning about a whole new area of design. – Furniture!

 When I put the two together (dolls and pieces of furniture), it was like looking at a new dimension, or perspective to my collecting. I realized that my love of these two things, actually made a good marriage !

 My photos looked more interesting. My dolls, more beautiful, more life-like, MORE entertaining! It wasn’t until I got a little carried away with creating suites of furniture that I decided it might be time to offer them for sale. This began a new direction for me on a business level. 

While I know that not everyone has a talent for design or crafting furniture, there are resources, such as myself, to help you in your endeavor to pull together a diorama of your own. Here are some tips that may help you along the way.

 You may feel intimidated by where to start.  Well, start out small. Choose a piece of furniture rather than a room. A great chair, or a dresser is a good place to begin. These pieces will help when posing the doll or giving her “character”.

 Whenever possible, utilize natural light.  This is one of the best ways to get a realistic looking scene.

LESS is MORE!  Don’t over accessorize a room with little knick knacks. Clean lines and a few carefully chosen pieces are all that’s needed to bring a room to life! The dolls will stand out more if there is not too much going on in the scene.

 I want you to notice in my photos, how I have used these tips.

  Natural daylight is streaming through the windowed walls .  

I’ve used two of my favorite colors (red and pink) to  create a really feminine setting.

 The furniture is the main staple in the room, and nothing but a beautiful crystal lamp is on the table.

 The windows frame the walls, as well as the doll. She is naturally posed on the sofa, standing in the room and leaning on the chair, while the room makes the composition of each photo come to life.

 When you look at these scenes, they are pleasing to the eye.  You enjoy not only the doll, but the entire setting. I personally can see how people get lost when gazing at paintings, or photographs, or miniatures . Dioramas can transport you the same way. It’s an art form. It’s a creative dance between the love of something you treasure and your want to show it off.

 The idea of “play”, as an adult collector, takes on a whole new meaning when you apply it to dioramas and places to house our collections.

 An enlightening thing – this idea of recreating our lives in miniature. Perhaps your dioramas will take on the look of your own living space. Maybe they will capture a past memory. Or, there just might be a new style  of decor you were thinking of trying. What ever the reason really doesn’t matter.  You love your dolls. You  collect them for your own reasons. And, if you want to enjoy them even more, you may take it to the next level. A New Dimension. The Diorama.

We may not have the opportunity to get a particular doll that we covet, yet, we can take comfort in the fact that our fellow collector friends share in what they have, and for a time, we can be content to live through them until our turn comes to get that “Holy Grail” !

For myself, a collector too, I am lucky that my numerous years of restoration have afforded me the opportunity to see  and/or work on some  very rare dolls, that other wise I may never have seen at all!

A Friends’ recent acquisition of a lovely Long Hair American Girl Barbie brought out a little of that green in Me.  It’s all in good fun really,because I adore my friend and want only the best for her.

As a designer, the sheer idea of being green reminded me of how many times I have heard people comment that they don’t like the color green. Especially when it comes to furnishings or interior design.  This  always surprises me, as I find numerous shades of green to be absolutely divine for use in fabrics and paints!

So, I thought, why not make some lemonade out of these lemons or should I say “ sour grapes” when it comes to the color green ?  :) 

Today, in my Atelier,  the photo session was tri- fold because I am in need of inspiration and find that having a day of fun helps aid me in deciding what to offer next in my Welcome Home world. I also felt it was the perfect opportunity to squash the idea that green is no good.  AND, I got to play with a very lovely doll in the process !

For this photo session, which is purely for entertainment, I used what props and furniture I have on hand as well as my friends’  Long Hair American Girl Barbie who just happened to be wearing a GREEN Barbie sheath !
