Fast forward 50 years.  Even a cardboard house needs some remodeling by then!

I am delighted to once again bring you a Welcome Home re-design of a vintage Barbie structure!

An Unassuming Little Back Drop…

Feeling the need to create something new after a brief holiday break, I turned my attention to some of the smaller dolls in my fashion doll collection.

Standing at just 7.5″ high, but still every bit a fashion diva, my mini Hong Kong Lillis are a delight to design for , and so I decided that they needed a little (ha, little – get it?)  ”Welcome Home” lovin’.

Most of my furniture sets these days include some type of back drop, wall or structure, and are intended for my 12″ dolls, so something more suitable for the little Lillis would have to be made.  At first, it was just going to be a painted wall, to which I would add a floor and some furniture, of course.

Then I came across some photos of vintage doll houses (another love of mine) which inspired me to create, not only an interior for the little Lillis, but an EXTERIOR as well.   And right before my eyes, this unassuming little back drop became a Home.

Some of you may notice that I’ve added yet another mini “Ken” to my collection. Isn’t he handsome ?! And such a rare find !

It’s refreshing to design in a different scale than I am accustomed to. It gives me a  new perspective on things.  Does it mean I’ve given up my 1:6 scale ways ? – Not on your life ! :)   But this was fun and a great way to start off the New Year !

Anyone remember the 1965 television  series "Honey West"?  I was too young to be aware of the show at its inception, but not long ago, I was introduced to it for the very first time.  What a cool concept for 60's television!  Private Eye Honey West, was smart, stylish, and always got her man!  The series was based on the Honey West novels by G.G.

Purely for fun and entertainment, I'm reposting "This Girl for Hire !" - My take on the  Honey West TV series from 1965.  The original post is from May of 2011.  Enjoy, and Happy Holidays ! Maryann :)

Pillow Talk !

This has to be one of the most ambitious sets I’ve ever made – well, at least right up there with re-designing Barbie’s New Dream House!

From a favorite movie of mine starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day, I give you Jan Marrow’s apartment from the movie Pillow Talk ! :

Last two photos showing the set in its entirety. Yes, it’s large !  It measures approximately 40″ across and 30″ deep and stands 18 1/2″ at its highest point!  This beauty has two tiers as you may have noticed from the photos. Gives the living room that sunk in look.

If you are familiar with the movie, you know that Jan has a sweet pink/grey galley kitchen looking into the living room.  Here’s the inspiration shot from the movie:

pillow

So, I’ve included the kitchen island to complete the look of this set.

The apartment was built-in sections so you can even remove the wall from the office area if you’d like.  The office chair can also be used in the living room for extra seating and the side table could also be used as a coffee table, just like the small pedestal tables Jan had in front of her sofa!

Because the set is so large, I opted to omit the bedroom and just imply it by adding the hallway (in yellow as seen in the movie) to give you the feeling that the bedroom is just beyond those walls.

This gorgeous “diorama of your dreams” is going to be featured in the Music  issue of FDQ magazine coming out in the spring.  Doris Day is one of the most celebrated singers of the 20th century and what better way to celebrate music than to feature her along with Rock Hudson in one of the best  loved movies of all time.

This truely special, one of a kind set is FOR SALE THIS SET IS NOW SOLD !

I intend to place it up for auction next week, but I  welcome any interested parties to make an offer  before then. What a glorious way to celebrate your dolls !    Please contact me at: welcomehome@maryannroy.com  and I would be happy to discuss further details.

Classic TV – Welcome Home Style !

“Welcome to TV Land” from the VINTAGE  issue of Fashion Doll Quarterly magazine – Fall 2009

Enjoy!

Maryann

 ”Welcome to TV Land “

I was absolutely delighted to be informed that this issue of Fashion Doll Quarterly would be Vintage themed. So many images and thoughts went through my head, it was mind-boggling!

Not only was the love of my vintage Barbie dolls an image, but how about lots of other things that I grew up with? S&H Green Stamps, Stewardesses in blue uniforms, Avon Calling, wearing wigs on purpose – smoking was fashionable! Turn tables and Christmas catalogues – the list goes on!

What should I choose to submit as my one of my favorite vintage things?

Knowing full well that doll lovers enjoy many other past times, myself being one of them, it occurred to me that another reminder of growing up was the common practice of watching TV.

Do you remember what shows were popular when you were a kid?

I do! This is what inspired my article for the Vintage theme. Why don’t I combine classic TV shows with today’s modern dolls?!

If you are a Baby Boomer, or Classic TV watcher, chances are you will recognize the following sets.

Without peeking ahead, can you name any of these famous living rooms?

Through the magic of television, we were entertained, engaged, enjoyed and relaxed. Imagine if you will, these classic TV living rooms coming to life for our dolls. Don’t we, as collectors, daydream and relax while enjoying our dolls? Don’t we forget about the stress and worry in our lives, if only for a little while?

Allow me to take you on a trip to TV Land, where television, dolls, 1:6 scale, and the kid in you can relive some wonderful memories!

Welcome to – 635 East 68th St., Manhattan, New York

Do you recognize this place?  It’s the home of the Ricardo’s – Lucy and Ricky, circa 1954.   Although the show was originally filmed in black and white, through a little research and a lot of imagination, this charming flat was brought to life with colors I felt were consistent with the 1950’s.

Not everything can be recreated in miniature. Sometimes there is just not enough room, or necessity when working on a small scale. In the recreation of these Classic TV sets, I had to decide what factors were the most important in order to relay an image that you, as readers, would instantly be familiar with.

In the case of the Ricardo’s, their furnishings are simple. That’s to showcase the actors, of course. But another important element of the Ricardo’s living room is their front door. This is were all the comings and goings of Lucy’s silly and sometimes ridiculous antics took place.

Remember what I said about smoking being fashionable? Well Lucy and Ricky were not only heavy smokers and did so on their show, but a big sponsor for the “I Love Lucy” show was Phillip Morris – cigarette makers both then and now.  A common place in the Ricardo home was the availability of cigarettes and ashtrays.

I also felt it was important to show the window, making the room feel larger and more realistic. Traditionally a piano was always under this window, but since I am no piano maker, I chose a simple buffet style cabinet instead, as a place to house the lamp. This piece is typical of what would be found in a 1950′s home.

Who’s the gal I chose to stand in for Lucy? Well, it’s every Barbie doll lover’s favorite red-head, -Fashion Editor! You can see by the way she is entirely comfortable in this setting, that modern-day dolls can live in retro style.

Take a seat Barbie. Relax with a Phillip Morris cigarette. – “Call for Phillip Morris!”

(Ok, Barbie doesn’t actually smoke! She’s just slipping into character.)

Next, it’s onto New Rochelle, New York to visit the set of one of the most endearing comedies of the 1960’s – “The Dick Van Dyke Show!”

The Petrie Family lived a very stylish, yet comfortable life in their sprawling ranch house. In fact, their living room was so big, it included a large window seat, huge curved sofa and seating area, dining area and a casual seating area by a wood stove!

You might see the impossibilities in recreating this rather large room in miniature. Again, I decided on what I felt were the most important aspects of the Petrie living room. Of course, the curved sofa was the most desirable to me, (loving Mid Century Modern furnishings as I do,) so this is the area I chose to focus on.

I also knew that I had to incorporate the step down into the living room and the ottoman, which Dick Van Dyke trips over in the opening sequence of the show.

Relying again on research and artistic liberty, (this show also filmed in black and white), I designed the living room in beige and gold with a little peach thrown in for a splash of color.  To give the idea of a window, I used sheer curtains and a backlight to imply daylight.

The sofa had a large, colorful painting hanging on the wall above it. I used the same theme (horses) and chose a painting I thought reflected the colors of the room.

The chair that was usually beside the sofa had a more ornate feel to it, while the sofa was totally modern.  I felt that replicating the chair was important because of the differences between the two. It too, is quite recognizable.

This gorgeous, Mastermind Veronique,  perfectly imitates Laura Petrie, effortlessly  showing her classic look and sheer comfort in her chosen surroundings.

Last stop on our trip to TV Land – 1164 Morning Glory Circle, Westport, CT. The address alone should be a give away for total “Bewitched” freaks, like me!

One look into the Stevensen’s living room and you will certainly be transported back in time!  This living area had some of the most classic elements to it. Brick wall, fireplace, and French doors to name a few.

I have to admit that this room was the easiest to recreate because I’ve watched the dvd’s so many times, it’s like I was actually there! And, my dvd’s are in color, which made it easier to duplicate.  But, there are still certain elements that belong in this room that needed to be built precisely in order to convey that it is where you think it is.

In the 1st season of Bewitched that lovely brick wall was indeed white brick, with a huge fireplace.

On the far side of the fireplace, the wall had several cubby holes in it to house books and knickknacks. Now, I spent a lot of time looking for the correct size bricks to build this wall, so I wasn’t about to cut another six holes in it!  Instead, I chose small black framed photos to imply where the cut outs were. There is also a large painting over the fireplace. Much like the original, this man is also playing a lute.

This living room would not be complete without the existence of the French doors that open out to the patio!  Skillfully crafting these doors and adding pictures of landscaped yards to the window cut outs is what gives them a truly life-like look.

“Bewitching Luchia” (aptly named) is a stunning likeness of Elizabeth Montgomery.  How magically this modern-day gal fits into this décor!

I hope you have enjoyed my vintage trip to TV Land. This may inspire you to add more dimension to your doll collecting by giving your dolls a place to live.

SHAG! In 3D !

My love of Mid-Century Modern is no secret. And this love extends to all things MCM - Interior Design, Furnishings, Architecture and of course Art.

One of my favorite artists is Josh Agle, aka – SHAG.  His renderings of mid-century modern living are colorful, full of life, and have a wonderful sense of humor that I find absolutely charming.  Each painting or illustration tells a story. Subtle, yet still there.  SHAG leaves it up to you (the viewer) to figure out what message or story he is trying to tell. This is half the fun.

Because I’m such an admirer of both his art and depictions of mid-century modern, I thought to myself – How great would it be for our dolls to “live” in a SHAG painting?!

And so, I set out to do just that.

I’ve chosen 3 SHAG prints that I found pleasing to the eye and that depicted an interior scene .  I created these sets as Vignettes, which means the furniture, accessories, walls and floors are included with each one. A complete SHAG painting come to life or, in 3D if you will.

There are only 3 sets total. Each one is a ONE OF KIND artist’s rendering (work of art) of the original print, as I see it.

NO DOLLS ARE INCLUDED – They are just modeling for the scene comparison . This is where you get to have fun and place your dolls in the scene !

I hope you enjoy this “out of the box” venture.

The way to a Collector’s Heart

This past Sunday, I had the opportunity to help out a friend and work a local doll show.  I’ve never sold at a doll show before.  But, I did want to help out AND I thought , what better place to be when you like to be surrounded by the items you collect and have a chance to chat with people who share your same desire and passion for collecting!

Though it makes me sad, I understand why Doll Shows are becoming a thing of the past. It’s A LOT of work preparing for the show!  Deciding what to bring, pricing your items, filling out paperwork, packing, hauling, travelling, the list goes on.   It’s no wonder selling via the internet is looking more and more attractive to dealers.

HOWEVER, for US (Collectors) there is nothing like the  opportunity to see so many vintage toys and dolls in one place !  That high of finding the holy grail to add to our collection,  discovering a new toy or learning about a treasure that you’ve never heard of before.   Being there, in that atmosphere, seeing the sites and actually holding the item, is by far, the best way to acquire a new treasure!   Knowledge is Power! And the more you know, the more you will enjoy your own collection.

These are wonderful people who devote their time to selling their wares and bring a little pleasure to our lives.  They have a wealth of information that they are happy to share with you if given the time. It’s hard work to put on a show, but if we continue to support our local doll and toy shows, – to show up – purchase a little something - or get involved, we might just keep these wonderful attractions alive !

Here are some highlights from the show that I wanted to share with all of you:

One of Dealers, Cindy Sabulis, Owner of “Toys of another time”, is also the author of several books on vintage dolls, including her most recent release:  Tammy – Rarities From Around The World .

This is a gorgeous, well laid out book, with a wealth of information for the Tammy collector !

You can order this book directly from Cindy by going to the Toys of Another Time website :

http://toysofanothertime.com/

email:  toys4two@snet.net

I enjoyed My time at the doll show.  It was a new experience for Me. I met new people, gained more knowledge and information about My collection, and just had a great time being with people who enjoyed the same things as I do.  A Doll Show, no matter how big or how small, is definitely the way to this collector’s heart !
