Unexpected Treasures !

Sometimes switching gears can prove to be a difficult task, especially for creative types who tend to need a break before moving on to a new project. Such is the case for Me at present.

I have a rather large project that I need to get cracking on, yet I just can’t seem to build up the steam needed to do it.

While the business end of things is not always pleasant,  it is part of what I do and what I need to deal with on a daily basis. Having said that, a recent, less than fortunate business transaction, not only had me stumped but honestly, quite perplexed!  Dwelling on this circumstance only made it harder for me to move along. Those who know Me, will attest to the fact that I am quite sensitive, especially where my Art is concerned.

Well yesterday, ‘The Bubble Broke’, as it were. I decided to look at the situation from a different perspective. Time to stop wallowing in my disappointment.

These days I’m quite busy concentrating on the furniture aspect of my business, but I am still a doll lover and collector at heart. So, I thought I’d turn my attention to some of the dolls I’d been neglecting and work on something  just for Me.

In the bag of dolls I had set aside for primping, dressing, and fussing with, I rediscovered my Barbie “Cat Woman” doll.  Now, you should know that I specifically purchased this doll because she has a vintage look and bendable legs. But most important, a fabulous hair style unlike any of the other reproduction dolls!  It was always my intention to repaint her face and fool with her hair. –  And, she would become my “vintage” doll that never was!  In my anxiousness to transform her, I neglected to take a “before” photo. I know, shame – shame.  However, if you want to see a picture of her prior to my repaint, I’m sure you can find one on the internet somewhere !  🙂

The photo above is indeed my newly transformed “Cat Woman”. I am delighted at that way she turned out !  Yes, I know she is an inexpensive reproduction type doll, but this makes her even more of a treasure.  I saw her potential at our first meeting and darned if I wasn’t going to see if I could  turn her into something even more special. She’s an Un-expected Treasure !

I would combine this new doll with some of my “re-claimed” furniture pieces, throw in some props and see them all in a new light.  This would fuel my vision for my future project and allow me to move on and enjoy some of the things I work so hard at.

The following photos are the results of today’s creative photo shoot.

Yes, I am an Artist, and I work at it.  Why do I do what I do ? A favorite quote from writer Kurt Vonnegut sums this up nicely.  :

” Go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living.

They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art

no matter how well or how badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven’s sake.

Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even

a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can.  You will get an enormous reward.

You will have created something. ”

As always, wonderful, Maryann, just wonderful! She has the sweetest face and her hairstyle, well, I wore my hair in the very same way back in the day. Hair actually used to have style back then.
Don’t let the unbelievers get you down. Adversity is irritating and disappointing, but ends up making us stronger than ever. Love the room, love the doll, love the imagination and artistry.

She is absolutely darling! And, as someone else said, I wore my hair in a very similar fashion in the early 70s. 🙂 Makes me smile. Hope your new day brings you many smiles! Hugs!

Wow, I saw your Barbie and was ready to run to the store to get one…she’s so pretty! Mattel needs to hire you. 🙂 I have a lot of Barbies but have never attempted to restyle one…I still have my old Barbie Bazaar mags which I think has tips but I’d only attempt it on a really beat up doll. I do love to sew little dresses and accessories for Babs.
It just dawned on me that Mattel has never done Rob & Laura Petrie…my favorite t.v. show! I would so buy them.
I think your sets are awesome…you really nail that vintage era. And, I love that quote…I’m gonna remember that one. 🙂

Maryann, I just saw your Catwoman reincarnation and she’s so sweet and stylish, just like you!! I agree that any creative outlet is refreshing to our inner spirit. Sometimes, it’s just what the doctor ordered!
